"BADGAST, in between PS1 New York and Shanghai"

Documentary photographer Janine Schrijver works on two series: Stories from the City and Stories from the sea. Both are worldwide projects in which she focuses on the way people engage to public space.

At the end of the boulevard in Scheveningen, next to the harbour lies, sandwiched between two chips palaces, the surfing village F.A.S.T.. In the midst of a kite maker, longboard builder, camping, surfboard storage and shop stands on top of a bunker - which is now a museum - the Badgast container. An artist in residence, temporary home and workplace of Janine.
She investigated this particular location on the coast, with the focus on observing and recording the relations, behavior and interactions of people, related to their environment. The public space is her workspace. 'Coast Portraits, tales of the sea' is an ongoing international project about the life and longing for the shore. The coast represents a dual ideal: nature and culture, a sense of wideness, freedom, space for personal reflection - often synonym with nature but with cultural facilities. Janine searched images in which this universal desire is expressed in an individual personal story.
