ZEESPIEGEL - MIRROR ON THE SEA
Satellietgroep programed Badgast, a research based artist in residence program, an outdoor Cinema with screenings, debates all concerning the sea. Badgast was built in 2009. Badgast was made of two stacked shipping containers by recycle architects Refunc for Satellietgroep. Badgast was located in the middle of the surfing village FAST, an Urban Beach Community in The Hague.  During the residency period new works – both conceptual and documentary - were developed and reflected upon the various layers and complexity of coastal transitions and coastal urban development. These works contributed to the international contemporary collection of artworks that was shared with a broad (international) audience.
Artists in residence were encouraged to engage the coastal area of the hague and all its themes. Developing artistic research with local partners in order to map out, collect and address the current state of coastal development. This embedded research contributes to public and professional awareness. Thus, our project brings together different views and opens up dialogue. This method of artist in residency program connects to the international development of artist residencies as cells of knowledge and as alternative academies.

Observe the sea with residents and visitors.

Discover with artists and scientists a different horizon.

Together they tell tales about our relationship with the sea.

The Netherlands has a rich cultural and innovative relationship with the sea and The Hague Scheveningen plays an important role in this. The continuing need for coastal defense due to rising sea level in past, present and future is important for everyone. The design and construction of this new boulevard is an innovative example. The versatile wealth of imagination and experience of the coast is the subject of research of Satellietgroep. Focus is the influence the sea has on people, community and environment. Satellietgroep programs Badgast - artist in residence, outdoor cinema and lectures, all concerning the sea. Badgast is located in the middle of the surfing village FAST, the Urban Beach Community at the hinge point of promenade and harbor. The result of the program is a contemporary Sea collection. In cooperation with residents and a rich diversity of users of the sea and the coastal zone a contemporary collection is in progress. Contributions about innovative coastal protection, including the Sandengine, complete the tales about our relationship with the sea and makes them accessible to everyone.

Artists run initiatief Satellietgroep contributes the exhibition ‘Zeespiegel’ (‘Mirror on the Sea’) to the Spanish architect Manuel de Sola-Morales (1939 -2012). He stated that in the lightboxes there should be no advertisements.
