Met een achtergrond in wetenschap, richt de Russische kunstenaar Masha Ru zich op de relatie tussen mens en aarde. Ru is gefascineerd door geofagie - het eten van aarde en aarde-achtige stoffen. In een aantal landen over de hele wereld is het een veel voorkomende culturele, spirituele of helende traditie. In Europa en de VS wordt het officieel beschouwd als een psychische aandoening, die bekend staat als pica. Het eten van aarde in Ru's werk raakt aan cultuur, spiritualiteit en verslavingen. Voor het Museum of Edible Earth verzamelt Ru monsters van eetbare aarde van over de hele wereld. Ze reisde naar Guatamala, Suriname en Indonesië om op locatie te zoeken naar de oorsprong van tradities en het hedendaagse gebruik van grondstoffen.
Tijdens haar artist-in-residency bij Satellietgroep voor Klimaat als mensenwerk, richtte Ru zich op lokale klei en keramische archeologische artefacten uit de omgeving van Den Haag, in samenwerking met lokale experts. Dialoog vormt de kern van dit onderzoek. Tijdens proeverijen en performances onderzoekt ze hoe mensen reageren op fysiek contact met verschillende soorten klei en artefacten.

With a background in science, Russian artist Masha Ru focuses on the human-earth relationship. Ru is fascinated by geophagy - the act of eating earth and earth-like substances. In a number of countries all over the world it is a common cultural, spiritual or healing tradition, while in Europe and USA it is officially regarded as a psychological disorder. The act of eating earth and soil-like substances in Masha's work touches upon culture, spirituality and addictions. For the Museum of Edible Earth, Ru collects samples of edible earth from around the world. She travelled to Guatamala, Suriname and Indonesia to seek on location the origin of traditions and contemporary use of raw materials.
During her artist-in-residency with Satellietgroep for Climate as Artifact, Ru focused on exploring the possibility of engagement with local clay and archaeological ceramics artifacts from the area of The Hague, with local experts. Dialogue forms the core of this research. During tastings and performances, she investigates how people react to physical contact with different types of clay and artifacts.
